Description
Alnus viridis, commonly known as Sitka alder, is a provincially yellow listed tree or shrub in BC. Federally it is not listed. It is part of the birch family. They are commonly found in deciduous forest habitats. Alnus viridis is a tree or shrub that is 1-5 m tall. The leaf shape is ovate (oval, egg-shaped, with a tapering point and the widest portion near the petiole). Their surface is smooth. Their edges are dentate or double serrate. Leaves are 4-10 cm long. The stem is yellow, red or brown in colour and has a scales surface. . Fruit are approximately female cones 1.5-2 cm long The fruit are egg-shaped and winged. Their prefered habitat is deciduous forest. Sun exposure is typically shade. They typically grow in loamy soil. Moisture requirements are moist soil. And the pH requirements are neutral. It can be found from 0 m to 500 m in elevation. It can be found in British Columbia, Canada. Alnus viridis is found in the coastal-western-hemlock biogeoclimatic zone(s). |
